Um euch die Kostenaufteilung einer Jeans näher zu bringen, habe ich ein Beispiel für eine 50 Euro Jeans gewählt. Die Prozentualen Anteile können, für andere Preissegmente verwendet werden. Je nach Denim brand kann es eine Abweichung geben, die sich aber nur in der unteren Region der Darstellung wiederspiegeln wird.

Am Beispiel einer Jeans möchte ich euch zeigen, welche Schritte sie bei der Produktion durchläuft und wie viel Kilometer sie dabei zurücklegt bis die Jeans im Laden liegt und ihr die kauft.

I want to show you the example of a pair of jeans, what steps it goes through the production and how many miles they traveled by it until the jeans is in the retail store, and until it is bought from you.

 

Hauptländer für Jeansproduktion

Textilproduktion wird zunehmend in Länder mit „günstigen Bedingungen“ verlagert. Das heißt, flexible und billige Arbeitskräfte leichter Zugang zu Rohstoffen und Transportwegen.

Für die Konsumenten bedeutet diese Verlagerung billige Kleidung und Textilien.

Die  Kehrseite der Medaille sieht jedoch anders. Günstige Bedingungen für Unternehmen heißt;

• Missachtung von Arbeitnehmer-Rechten

• Beschäftige häufig Frauen und Kinder

• Oft schlechte Bedingungen

• Sehr lange Arbeitszeiten (>60 Std./Woche)

• Niedrig Löhne (keine Deckung der Grundbedürfnisse)

• Schlechte Sicherheitsbedingungen (Unfälle i.d. Fabriken)

• Mangelnde Hygiene (Masken [Textilstaub], WC, Trinkwasser)

• Häufig Diskriminierung von Frauen (weniger Lohn als Männer)

Main countries for jeans production

Textile manufacturing is increasingly outsourced to countries with "favorable conditions". In other words, flexible and cheap labor easier access to raw materials and transport routes.

This shift means for consumers cheap clothing and textiles.

Main countries for production of jeans are:

Bangladesh (Export Country: Europe / USA)
China (Export Country: Europe / USA)
Mexico (Export Country: USA)
Pakistan (Export Country: Europe / USA)
Turkey (local market / Export Country: Europe)
Tunisia (Export Country: Europe)

The flip side of that coin, however, is different. Favorable conditions for businesses mean;

 • disregard of worker-rights
 • Worker often women and children
 • Often poor conditions
 • Very long working hours (> 60 hrs. / Week)
 • Low wages (not meeting the basic needs)
 • Poor safty conditions (Accidents in the factories)
 • Poor hygiene (masks [textile dust], toilet, drinking water)
 • Often, discrimination against women (less rewarding than men).

what consumers are looking for ?

Is it possible to find out about what consumers are looking for and from where when it comes to any product category if we sift through the searches occuring on Google ?

The answer is ‘Yes” !!

Google is has become the default repository of the likings  and desires of mankind . It is so easy for Google to tell , say – which city in the world is aspiring for a particular product or service or even fantasy or which country in the world has a higher % of mathematics orientation and similar  unlimited other parameters.

Lets see whats happening on the denim scene. 

We did some comparisons for searches. We took four search terms :

• Soft Jeans
• Color Jeans
• Coated Jeans
• Stretch Denim

The trends compared these all four searches to find their Relative importance. It means that how these terms were searched relative to each other in the last 12 months. Lets see the result

The results are interesting. The ‘Color Jeans’ is a strong trend if we compare these searches. Stretch denim is of course always as it is becoming a default fabric for many styles and other popular searches are soft jeans and Coated Jeans.

Is it also possible to find out , say , which color of jeans could be most popular ?

Japanese Denim Brands

1. 45rpm : 45rpm is very cautious about the fabrics it uses and has an exclusive deal with its mill, ensuring one-of-a-kind materials. The  company’s denims are made from both Zimbabwe cotton and Suvin hybrid cotton,
2. Edwin : Founded in 1969 by Edwin Company mainly focused on jeans manufacture. Brad Pitt is an official  spokesperson and model  for the brand, and appears in many of its advertisements.
3. Evisu : Founded in 1991 by Hidehiko Yamane. Yamane-san was trained as a tailor but his love for vintage denimn and his disappointment with the mass-produced modern versions led him firstly to business of vintage clothing import business and later to start putting together the elements required to reproduce vintage-style jeans. The initial production was 14 pairs of jeans a day !
4. Iron Heart : The denim is made in Japan out of the highest quality, long fibre cotton. These long fibres allow the individual cotton threads to be spun less tightly than is normal. The result is a surprisingly soft feel to this ultra-heavy denim.
5. PRPS : Made from Zimbabwe Organic Cotton, the denim dream of the founder of Akademics and ex-Nike designer, PRPS defines perfection in today’s over saturated denim market.

Denim Brands In India
Indian denim market is on a high growth path with a rate of growth in the range of 8-12%. However, the market is dominated by the non-branded players who take away the major share of the denim market. The branded denim market is estimated to be  around $450-$500 million , and is dominated by some international labels though the local brands are also getting prominent.

1. Levi’s : Levi’s is the leader in the branded denim category with about 20-25% share of the market. Using various innovative strategies, Levi’s has strengthened its hold on the market. It started operating in India in 1994 and is present in over 250 cities.
2. Killer Jeans : Owned by the Kewal Kiran Clothing limited, the brand was introduced in 1989 and is one of the well known denim brands in India. The other brands by this company – Easies,  Lawman and Integritti are also well known menswear brands.
3. Spykar : Targetting the tastes of the youth of the country, Spykar uses its labs to bring out a large variety of designer denim jeans .The company launched aggressive campaigns in colleges, pubs and coffee shops as well as sponsored college events and fashion shows to target the right clients It is on a high growth trajectory and is currently reported to have a turnover of $45million+.

Besides the above , there is an array of national and international brands. International brands include Pepe Jeans, Lee Cooper , Wrangler and Lee from VF (in joint venture with Arvind) , Tommy Hilfiger, Replay Jeans  etc. Diesel is a recent entrant and  the brands from Sixty Group Energie and Miss Sixty will be launched shortly.
